Toni Monaghan will share her personal story about living with dyslexia.
Toni is a Brisbane teacher with dyslexia who has spent her life listening to other people’s misconceptions about it. Through hard work and persistence she has developed a love of reading and writing which she hopes to pass on to her students with dyslexia.
She attended university as a mature-age student and graduated with a Bachelor of Education. She has taught at all levels of school — kindergarten, primary and high school.
Toni has many insights to share about learning to read and developing a love of reading, the challenges people with dyslexia face at university, and battling against other people’s misconceptions about dyslexia.
I did not have a natural love of reading but developed this in time thanks to my parents’ persistence. The thought of writing made my stomach churn and my hands shake. I avoided it at all costs. However, I finally came to realise that writing was a tool that would help me to appreciate the world around me.
